The Ministry Center
Oakland Baptist Church’s Clothing Ministry Center
What is the purpose of the Ministry Center?
The Ministry Center provides quality clothing, shoes, and essential housewares items at no cost to those in need in the York County community.
How does it work?
Clients are checked in each time they come to shop, and they may shop once during each shopping period, which is typically between 2-3 months long.
Shopping bags and printed shopping guides, which list the allocation allowance for each type of garment, are provided to each client for shopping.
Each family may also choose one housewares item, and typically there are bonus and seasonal items available as well.
When finished shopping, clients proceed to the check-out area where a volunteer will confirm that their selections match the current allocation allowance.
What do I need to know before I come to shop?
The first time you shop at The Ministry Center you will be asked to complete a form that includes your name, address, phone number, and the ages of all in your family for whom you are shopping.
If you have children who are 18 years of age or older, they must have their own account.
You will be asked to show your ID on your first and subsequent shopping trips.
The Ministry Center is open for shopping on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9AM - 11:30AM.
What kind of donations are needed?
We seek high-quality, gently-used clothing for men, women and children. Our clients deserve the best we can offer.
Also accepted are essential housewares items, including (but not limited to) bedding, lamps, kitchenware, and small appliances. These items will help improve daily living.
What kind of donations are not needed?
Clothing with excessive wear, stains, missing buttons, or broken zippers.
Baby items, including (but not limited to) strollers, car seats, bassinettes, cribs, etc. These items may be subject to a recall of which we are unaware.
Medical or health equipment, including (but not limited to) wheelchairs, walkers, etc. These items should be taken to the Caring Closet at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice, where they can be better matched up with those who need them.
Decor items, including (but not limited to) framed art, knickknacks, rugs, and furniture.
When can I bring donations?
Donations can be dropped off at The Ministry Center during shopping hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays (9AM-11:30AM).
How can I volunteer?
Volunteers are needed to facilitate the client check-in and check-out stations on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9AM-11:30AM, and to inspect, hang and tag donations at other times. No experience is necessary. These volunteer opportunities are easy and rewarding.
To volunteer, please contact Church Office 803-328-3864 or obcoffice@oaklandchurch.com.
