The children’s music education program at Oakland Baptist Church begins at 18-months and continues through fifth grade. We utilize several resources and tools to provide children with an excellent musical experience. Our Preschoolers begin their exploration of music through Kindermusik© and experience music in many extraordinarily active ways. Our teachers are highly trained with many years of leading these programs. Our Kindermusik© participants are not performing choirs but spend their time discovering music and growing with its concepts.
Music for our first through fifth graders (The Singers and Young Musicians) builds on the Kindermusik© curriculum through the use of Orff and Kodaly. These noted teaching methods encourage our children to be creative as they learn to sing. Our first through fifth grade choirs learn to lead in worship singing two to three times a year. These children also participate and perform in our Children’s Summer Music Camp. As these children enter fourth and fifth grades, their music horizons expand with the opportunity to learn to ring handbells.
Music for Preschoolers
Our music education program begins at 18-months with the teaching of Kindermusik©, a highly developed experiential approach to music training. Well-trained teachers with many years of experience teach our children this curriculum until they reach first grade. This has been an excellent training ground for Oakland’s children. The children who have been an active part of this program are excelling in music both in the choirs here at church as well as choirs and bands in schools.
Music for Elementary School
Music for our first through fifth graders (The Singers and Young Musicians) builds on the Kindermusik© curriculum through the use of Orff and Kodaly. These noted teaching methods encourage our children to be creative as they learn to sing. Our Kindermusik© choirs are not performing choirs but the first through fifth grade choirs sing two to three times a year.
Our first and second grade students spend their choir time developing their vocal abilities. In this year, The Singers spend time learning more about the art of singing. Learning to project their voices, match pitch, and using their bodies as an instrument helps the child to better understand and practice the things necessary to sing to the best of their ability. The children spend their year singing in unison and learning the concept of blend.
Our elementary music education continues with the second through fifth grade Young Musicians choir. Much emphasis is placed on the Kodaly style of singing and pitch recognition. Time is spent reading rhythms and notes for a greater understanding. This choir also develops the singing skills of the children including more advanced two part singing. The children are also involved in use of Orff instruments to develop rhythmic skills while singing. This choir sings in worship several times during the year and prepares our elementary singers with abilities that are used in our Youth Choir. These choir members also have developed their musical skills enough that they can be introduced to the world of handbells. These students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Beginning Handbells choir. This group also participates in worship each week by serving as acolytes and crucifers for our traditional 11:00 service.
